From Joan Graham,21st April 2006
I am seeking information on Arthur William GOUGH, my maternal grandfather who was born about 1883 in Bletchley. He was a chimney sweep in the melton area and was married twice, his first wife having died at a fairly young age.
We know that he lived at Somerby and later in Melton before leaving the area and moving to Manchester with his son from his second marriage, Harvey.

From Andrew Newcombe (N0157) 21st April 2006
One of my great uncles Leonard Newcombe was apparently regularly in jail in 1930's and 40's, as my great grandfather used to obtain his bail money from family.
Could anyone suggest how I can confirm details of convictions.
As I do not live in Leicestershire online sources greatly appreciated, but any welcome
. Many thanks
Andrew

From Andrew Newcombe (N0157) 21st April 2006
My paternal grandfather George Newcombe (1897-1944) was in the Great war. But I am having trouble finding out what regiment he was in. He apparently volunteered to be with his brother (who was then apparently given Dishonourable Discharge before shipping out) so likely to be part of new armies and possible fought at Gallipoli and/or Somme.
At one of these his regiment/battalion was slaughtered and he had to change units. He was apparently a sniper and may have ended up in Durham Light Infantry .
Leicester records office unfortunately do not have absent voters records for that period, have not got to Kew yet to check if it is there.
Any clues on where to go next welcome.
Many thanks
Andrew

Whilst we know Old Mill Lane is still around and is bounded by Sanvey Gate what happened to Durige Sathumbe Land? Where did the name come from? I have thought it was a mis-spelling but from what?
Any help gratefully received.

Tony Jackson 14/3/06
Query re Roger Dale of Tixover d. c.1623 from Tony (Australia).
I would like to find out more on Roger, his genealogy and his land holdings.
He was probably Lord of the Manor of Duddington about the time my ancestor Nicholas Jackson of Duddington (Burkes Landed Gentry, 1914) whose origins before 1598, I can not trace.
He may have been a "stranger" to Duddington. If so he may have come from nearby. He was a baker and yeoman and may have been a baker to the manor.
I am thinking he may have come to Duddington because of an "opportunity" there and may have come from one of Roger's other holdings.
If anyone can direct me to any sources I would be grateful.

I am a descendant of Elizabeth Hippisley of Hableton. Sometime ago a kind person located my ancestor, John Jackson's obelisk at Hambelton. Regards,
Jackson

I wonder whether anyone can help with information on my great great grandmother, Clara Knowles who married Henry Millard in Duffield, Derby on 27/7/1862.
Her father was William Knowles and she was said to be 19 when she married Henry.
In later census returns she is listed as Cara and was born in Bagworth, Leicestershire, and she can appear to be three years older - further I cannot get at the moment.
I do hope someone has access to info or can point me in the right direction. Sue Sue

We are currently researching my wifes family tree. Her maiden name was Cumberland and we have been able to trace a Catherine Cumberland in the 1861 census who was born at Beaumanor in the village of Woodhouse in Leicestershire as one of her ancestors.

We are very impressed with the site which has made us feel that there is someone out there who can help us in our quest.

Hello,
Like your site and the music.
Wish I could use it more. Am trying to confirm early life details of my GGGF Joseph Hayes. He moved to Warwickshire in the early 1820s and I can trace him from then.
However, his birth details are uncertain. The 1851 census shows him as born Smisby Leics 1798, the 1871 shows him as born Shearsby 1792/3.
The 1851 information is the LDS transcription.
Can any of your members help please
Many thanks

My Great Uncle, James William Bamford, was born 1873 in Keythorpe, son of Thomas and Lizzie (Skelhorne). He was called William on the census so it took some years to get his birth certificate as I was looking only for William and there are a LOT of William Bamfords.

In any event, I recently ordered his death certificate (I have the birth certificate). James William died 19 November 1947 in Oadby - his home was 19 Albion Street. The surprise on his death certificate was that his wife's initials (as the informant) were E. G. Bamford - up until then I thought his wife was likely Louisa as there is a James William Bamford who married a Louisa in Ratby in the indices.

I've now found the death of Emily G. Bamford, age 59, in Chesterfield in 1949 but until I order the certificate will not be sure that this is James William's spouse.

Does anyone reading this have any information on Bamfords in Oadby?

Would appreciate recommendations on where I might find APPRENTICESHIP RECORDS for Leicestershire in early 1800s and how I might access them.
I am otherwise stuck in trying to find his actual date and place of birth.

I recently sent for the death certificate of my g-g-grandfather, John Jarman, a confectioner from Leicester. On the 1881 census he was living with his wife in Harding St, All Saints, Leicester. He died on 31st October that year.
I was deeply shocked when I received the certificate to learn he had been a prisoner in Leicester gaol, and the cause of death was "Destroyed himself by cutting his throat when in a state of temporary madness". I still shudder when I look at those words.
I really want to find out why my g-g-grandfather was in gaol, and what caused him to take his life so violently. So far all my searches have met with brick walls. I am hoping someone reading this message may be able to point me in the right direction to discover some of those answers.
