Introduction

Like most grannies, she had some tales to tell, and like most children we did not take much notice at first. Children take so much for granted. They don't know what is important and what is not, and it would be rude to ask.

Long after her death we discovered that some of what she said had more significance than we, and perhaps she, had realised. Many of these stories concerned her role as a nanny. She may not have had direct contact with major historical figures, but she came close. This is the story of a Granny in our family. That's a granny with one or two "greats" in front of it, depending on who you are talking to.

In this web version of the story, we have included links on the left in case you are impatient to read a particular section. We will start with "The Nanny" to put some of the story into context.
